Summer 2018Rochdale Online

20 years serving the borough of Rochdale

Rochdale Online is a rarity, an independent family-owned online news publication started by a local man in June 1998. It is the oldest, most popular, most successful socalled ‘hyperlocal’ website in the country.

From inception, Rochdale Online, based in Rochdale town centre and whose staff all live locally, has strived to serve the community by providing an authoritative source of local news and by promoting local businesses, groups and organisations.

The website has grown to become a very important resource for the local community, recognised throughout the borough as the source of trustworthy, reliable news and information.

Along with the ‘Main News’ section, the site has a ‘Sports News’ section; this carries reports on Rochdale AFC and Rochdale HornetsRLFC, and a comprehensive array of amateur sports/clubs, including cricket, rugby league, rugby union, football, golf, hockey, running, cycling, swimming, boxing, martial arts, and even regular reports on a local motor rally driver.

The ‘Community News’ section covers everything from small fetes to large community awards events and Rochdale Online still sends journalists out to cover small community events; something that is much appreciated by the local community.

The local business community is catered for in the ‘Business News’ section. In the main, this section covers news about local companies, but also features regional and national business news that is of interest to our readers.

The news section of the website is very popular, however, there is much more to Rochdale Online beyond the news.

The website is full of useful local information, from a comprehensive local business search engine, to a hugely popular, free to advertise in, events diary.

Hundreds of local job vacancies, plus properties for sale and to rent can be found.

Rochdale Online takes its commitment to the local community very seriously. It is important to give back to the community, and as such from the very beginning of the website back in 1998 Rochdale Online has offered local community groups, voluntary organisations and charities not just quality coverage of their news but also a free website hosted and maintained by Rochdale Online.

Market share and growth are impressive, from 58,000 unique visitors a month in 2011 to over 160,000 in 2018.

Our MP Tony Lloyd has this to say: “Rochdale Online is a well established source of news for people across Rochdale and the surrounding area. This online journal has a dedicated following of people who have come to rely on it for factual and relevant local information.”

Rochdale Online is a genuinely local company, based in the town centre, employing local people, covering the patch in which they live and work giving the local community quality, in-depth news.
